How Do Professionals Tackle the Trickier Points of Regular House Cleaning?

Six jobs account for most of the frustration in house cleaning. In every case the answer is the same shape: the right product, enough dwell time, mechanical agitation, and accepting that some of it is a deep-clean job rather than a weekly one.

The six

What resists cleaning, and why
JobWhy it resistsWhat actually works
Shower groutGrout is porous; soil sits below the surfaceAlkaline cleaner, long dwell, then a stiff brush along the line
Oven door glassBaked carbon has chemically bonded to the glassDedicated oven product, long dwell, plastic scraper, repeat
Rangehood filterGrease has polymerised into a varnishSoak in hot water with a degreaser, then brush
Window tracksGrit compacts into a paste in the cornersVacuum first, then wet, then a narrow brush; never wipe alone
Skirting boardsDust bonds to a static-charged surfaceDamp cloth, not dry; work along the top edge first
Shower screenMineral deposits have etched into the glassMild acid for deposits; etching itself cannot be cleaned out

Dwell time is the step everyone skips

Spraying and immediately wiping removes loose soil and wastes the product. Most cleaning chemistry needs to stay wet on the surface for a stated time to do its job. That time is on the label and it is usually longer than people give it.

How professionals use the waiting time

Apply product to the shower, the basin and the toilet, then go and do the mirror, the surfaces and the floor prep. By the time you come back, dwell time has passed and the work is already half done. Nothing was rushed and nothing was idle.

Agitation does the rest

Chemistry loosens; something physical still has to lift it out. On grout that is a brush along the line, not a cloth across the tile. On a filter it is a brush into the mesh. A cloth glides over a textured surface without ever reaching into it.

The order that saves the most time

Working in this order means dwell time costs nothing, because something else is happening during it.

Know what is a weekly job and what is not

Grout, oven cavities, rangehood filters and window tracks are not weekly tasks. Trying to do them inside a regular clean means either the visit blows out or something else gets skipped. They belong on a monthly rotation or in a deep clean.

  • Weekly: surfaces, floors, wet areas, touch points, bins
  • Monthly rotation: skirtings, blinds, light fittings, under furniture
  • Deep clean: oven cavity, rangehood filter, window tracks, behind appliances
  • Trade job: regrouting, resealing, replacing perished silicone

We run regular weekly and fortnightly cleans across Melbourne's eastern suburbs. If you want to know what would suit your place, tell us about it and we will give you a straight answer.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my grout go dark again so quickly?

Because cleaning removed what was on the surface but not what is in the pores. Sealed grout resists this; unsealed or failing grout will keep reabsorbing.

Can old shower glass be brought back?

Deposits sitting on the glass, yes. Etching that has gone into the glass cannot be cleaned out — a screen treatment slows further etching but does not reverse it.

Is a stronger product the answer?

Usually not. Longer dwell time and proper agitation solve more problems than a harsher chemical, and harsher chemicals damage more surfaces.
