
Hardwood floors are damaged by water and by the wrong pH, not by dirt. The method is always the same: vacuum or sweep first, damp mop with a neutral cleaner, and dry immediately. Never flood a timber floor.
Identify the finish before you touch it
The finish determines everything. Getting this wrong is how floors get ruined by people trying to look after them.

The water drop test
Put a single drop of water on an inconspicuous area. Beads and sits: the finish is intact, damp mopping is fine. Soaks in or darkens within a minute: the finish is worn and water will damage the timber.
The method
Vacuum or sweep thoroughly first
Grit is what actually scratches a floor. Mopping over grit drags it across the finish.
Use a neutral pH cleaner, correctly diluted
Alkaline products dull polyurethane over time. More product does not clean better.
Damp mop, not wet
The mop should leave a film that disappears in under a minute. Standing water is the enemy.
Work with the grain, in sections
Following the boards hides any streaking and stops you walking over wet floor.
Dry any remaining moisture
Especially at board joins, along skirtings and around doorways where water pools.
What shortens a timber floor's life
- Steam mops — heat and moisture forced into the joins
- Vinegar, which is acidic and dulls polyurethane over time
- Ammonia or alkaline all-purpose cleaners
- Oil soaps on a polyurethane floor, which leave a film that resists recoating
- Abrasive pads and scouring powders
- A saturated mop and a full bucket of water
- Vacuum beater bars, which scuff the finish
- Furniture with no felt pads underneath
Marks and spills

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a steam mop on hardwood?
We would not. Steam forces heat and moisture into board joins, and most timber flooring manufacturers void warranties over it.
Is vinegar safe on timber floors?
It is acidic and will dull a polyurethane finish over time. A neutral pH floor cleaner is the safer choice.
How often should timber floors be mopped?
Vacuum or sweep often, mop less. Grit does the damage; frequent damp mopping mostly just adds moisture.
