How Do Window Cleaners Clean Windows With Frosted Glass?

How Do Window Cleaners Clean Windows With Frosted Glass?

Frosted glass cannot be squeegeed. The surface is deliberately uneven, so a blade skips across the high points and leaves everything in the low ones. It needs agitation and a proper rinse instead.

Why it behaves differently

Frosting is made by acid etching or sandblasting, which leaves a microscopically rough surface. That roughness is what scatters light — and it is also what grips soap scum, body oils, dust and hard-water minerals far more tenaciously than smooth glass does.

The method

1

Dry-brush the surface first

A soft brush lifts dust out of the texture. Wetting it first turns dust into paste.

2

Apply a mild solution and let it dwell

Warm water with a little dish soap. Give it a minute to soften what is in the texture.

3

Agitate with a soft brush

Small circles, then a second pass in the other direction. This is the step that does the work.

4

Rinse thoroughly

More than you think is needed. Residue left in the texture is what shows as cloudiness.

5

Blot dry with microfibre

Blot, do not wipe. Wiping drags residue back across the surface.

Where the cloudiness comes from

Almost always residue, not dirt. If frosted glass looks hazy after cleaning, the fix is a rinse with clean water and a blot dry — not more product.

Frosted bathroom windows and shower screens

These are the hardest, because soap scum and hard-water minerals both bond into the texture. Expect to need a longer dwell and a second pass. A mild acidic product helps with mineral deposits, but test it somewhere inconspicuous first — some frosted surfaces and applied privacy films do not tolerate acids.

Frosted film vs etched glass

  • Etched or sandblasted glass: the texture is in the glass; reasonably robust
  • Applied privacy film: a plastic layer; ammonia-free, no abrasives, no scraping
  • Feel the pane edge for a lip to tell which you have
  • When unsure, use the gentler method — it does no harm to etched glass

What not to do

  • Do not use a squeegee — it cannot reach the low points
  • Do not use an abrasive pad; it polishes the high points and creates shiny patches
  • Do not let the solution dry on the surface
  • Do not use paper towel, which sheds fibre into the texture
  • Do not skip the rinse; it is the step that decides the result

Frequently asked questions

Why does my frosted window look cloudy after cleaning?

Residue dried in the texture. Rinse with clean water and blot dry with microfibre rather than adding more product.

Can I use a magic-eraser style sponge?

No. They are abrasive and will polish the raised parts of the texture, leaving shiny patches that cannot be undone.

How do I clean frosted glass in a shower?

Longer dwell, soft brush agitation, thorough rinse. A mild acidic product helps with mineral deposits — test it in a hidden spot first.
